Illustration Friday: Similar

Whenever I have ever heard either of these men speak I have been inspired. Similar are their messages of hope and of equality and both make me want to be a better person.

Movie: The Reader

I saw the preview for this movie on Apple Movie Trailers and immediately came up with this idea. I have to say I was a little sick to my stomach and nervous creating the swastika in Illustrator for the image. Even though I understand this symbol predates Nazi Germany by thousands of years I still felt like I was somehow giving credence to those deadly beliefs, crazy I know. After hiding the file in a folder, within a folder, within a folder, using brighter and more interesting colors, I tried my best to redirect the viewers attention to the figures in the foreground. And from what I can glean from the preview these figures are the focus of the film. The movie stars Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes and is based on a best selling novel, it looks depressing but good. Enjoy the picture for what its worth.

Illustration Friday: Pretend

I'm not a kid anymore but I still love to "pretend" I am a martial arts expert, kicking ninja butt in the middle of a Japanese block print. So I drew it!!

Illustration Friday: Repair

Or re-pear. Little play on the word here. Got to get back into this it keeps me from feeling ridiculously guilty about not painting.

Illustration Friday: Island

I usually don't stretch for meanings but I've been really busy lately (see previous post) and everyone else does it. This was drawn while I was on an island, soooo...enjoy!

I've been busy!!

So I was recently hired by an educational publishing company to do some illustrations for their online assessment department so I haven't had much time to blog. Sorry I can't show you those images, they are tippity-top secret. But I also just recently had another cover published with the Monterey Weekly. The co-editor/art director and I tossed around some ideas out about an article detailing more Wal-Mart controversy in Soledad, CA and the result was this image. I like the guy a lot in fact he reminds me a little of my amazing, hairy-armed, mustach-ioed, dad. Since the only people that read this are my folks and maybe my brother, I thought I'd mention one of you and also show you what your boy, or in the case of my brother, "your boyieee!" is up to.

Later,
Ray
